We are seeking a Senior Director of Battery Engineering to lead and grow Oura’s battery technology strategy. This role will oversee a multidisciplinary team of engineers and external partners, ensuring that our wearable devices are powered by safe, reliable, and high-performance battery systems. You will define the long-term technology roadmap, manage global supplier relationships, and build a world-class engineering function that supports Oura’s next-generation products.

This is a hybrid role in our San Francisco office.

What You’ll Do

Team & Leadership

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of engineers, fostering technical excellence and innovation.
  • Define the organization’s priorities, processes, and best practices for battery development and validation.
  • Develop talent and cultivate an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture.

Technology Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own Oura’s battery technology roadmap, aligning it with product, design, and business strategies.
  • Evaluate and drive adoption of emerging chemistries, packaging methods, and charging innovations.
  • Guide long-term architecture decisions by anticipating future product needs and technology constraints.

Cross-Functional & Executive Collaboration

  • Partner closely with executives, product management, design, and hardware leadership to ensure battery solutions meet user experience goals and business requirements.
  • Ensure cross-functional support from mechanical, electronics, and firmware/algorithm teams, recognizing that battery performance is the result of system-level design decisions.
  • Influence product trade-offs by providing technical, safety, and manufacturability perspectives at the leadership level.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

Vendor & Supply Chain Engagement

  • Build strategic relationships with global battery suppliers, focusing on quality, reliability, cost, and scalability.
  • Oversee qualification processes and ensure supply chain resilience for high-volume production.
  • Represent Oura in negotiations and technical partnerships with leading battery vendors and research institutions.

Technical Oversight

  • Provide technical guidance on battery safety, testing standards, and integration approaches.
  • Ensure Oura sets industry benchmarks for battery reliability, lifetime performance, and user safety.
  • Drive resolution of complex technical issues, guiding teams through root cause analysis and long-term corrective actions.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in battery engineering for consumer electronics or high-volume devices, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
  • Proven success building and scaling battery teams, with demonstrated people management experience.
  • Deep knowledge of Li-ion and emerging chemistries, cell design, and packaging innovations.
  • Strong experience with battery safety, transportation and environmental certifications and navigating technical requirements for various product architectures
  • Strong background in supplier engagement and Asia-based vendor ecosystems.
  • Track record of defining and executing battery technology roadmaps.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence executive decision-making and build trust across global teams.
  • Strategic thinker with a hands-on mindset when necessary.
